FAQ:
How do I register my student for programming classes?
  • Click on one of the registration links above and complete the registration/purchase via care.com
Which class should I select?
  • Students with no coding experience or only experience using Scratch should register for Python (Beginner), Build a Website (Beginner), or 3D Printing. Build a Website (Beginner) is a good choice for students' first introduction to coding or those who prefer quick, visual results from their coding efforts.
  • Students who participated in a Build a Website class last semester or have some experience with HTML & CSS may register for Build a Website (Continuing Students) or Python (Beginner).
  • Students who participated in a Python coding class last semester or who can make rudimentary programs using Python should register for Python (Continuing Students), Generative AI, or Game development with Unity.
  • Students who participated in Python (Continuing students) last semester should register for Generative AI or Game development with Unity.
  • Students who are experienced with Python or starting to code in Java or other object-oriented languages can register for Java (Beginner) or Game development with Unity.
  • Students who participated in a Java coding class last semester should register for Java (Continuing Students).
How does the 3D Printing class work?
  • The class will instruct students to build accurate 3D models using Tinkercad and/or Blender. Completed models can be printed and shipped home via a partner printing company for around $15, or printed at home for those with a 3D printer. The class will also demonstrate 3D printer usage and functionality.
What is the Generative AI class about?
  • The Generative AI class will instruct students to use ChatGPT APIs within their Python programs to create an AI application that does image recognition or similar functionality. It extends students' previous Python experience to incorporate AI and machine learning capabilities into their programs.
What is the Game development with Unity class about?
  • Unity is a distinct programming language that is used commonly today to develop video games across multiple platforms including gaming consoles and mobile devices. This class will introduce students to Unity and instruct them to use Unity to build a simple video game. Programming experience is required.
Can my student switch classes if our availability changes?
  • Class changes cannot be accommodated once classes begin. To change your registration before classes begin, contact SV4U for assistance.
What if my student cannot attend some classes?
  • Please plan for your student to attend all classes. Class spaces are limited, and it is unfair to those unable to register when a class spot is taken by someone who does not attend. NOTE: Lack of attendance may prevent your student from participating in BHCC After-School programs in the future.
What happens if the class fills up before I can register?
  • When a class fills up, the registration page will enable a waitlist. You may try registering for a different class or add yourself to the waitlist for the desired class. Based on interest and available funding more classes may be added, and waitlisted individuals will be contacted to register.
What if I haven't received my class details after successfully registering?
  • Class materials and meeting links will be sent out a few days before the first class. Please add [email protected] and [email protected] to your address book to ensure no email communications go to spam. Check spam folders for emails from these addresses. Contact SV4U for further assistance if class details have not been received 2 days before the first class.
Why are the classes taught by SiliconValley4U?
  • SV4U is focused on preparing our youth to use coding and problem-solving skills to solve real-world business problems across a variety of industries. They offer several courses that can be continued while at Bret Harte and beyond.
  • Students continuing with SV4U classes into High School can:
    • Work on business driven projects for companies in Silicon Valley
    • Take advantage of a guaranteed SV4U internship
    • Participate in university capstone projects
    • Build a portfolio of applications for college hosted on NexClap
    • Prepare students for AP Computer Science curriculum in High School
What if I have additional questions about this program?
  • Please email us with any additional questions.
